Star Wars has a fascinating legacy of being in the form of Lego. Lego, being the hot commodity it already is, gave a brand new way tackling Star Wars content in a clever and insightful way. Whether you’re talking about the video games or the endless list of Lego Star Wars TV/movie specials, Star Wars being in Lego form was, arguably, the greatest way to skew to the much younger demographic of Stars Wars fans. Now, you’re not seeing many adults out there playing with Lego, but after the success of The Lego Movie and The Lego Batman Movie, it was proven that you can make these movies more accessible for a larger scale. That being the case, The Lego Star Wars Special is targeting more toward kids, however, the die hard Star Wars fans will absolutely adore this (including yours truly). The Lego Star Wars Special is an absolute delight that does indeed poke fun at all the Star Wars internet memes, tropes and cliches, yet it still shows the love and the impact that this franchise has had for all generations. Once this holiday special wrapped up, it’ll take you back to the first time you had when you were first taken to a galaxy far far away.

If you’ve never seen the original Star Wars Holiday Special from 1978, just go ahead and count your self lucky that you haven’t. George Lucas, himself, is even more upset that it currently exists and who can blame him? It’s not that the special isn’t good, it’s more along the lines that it’s an absolute bizarre and nonsensical special, that happens to be Star Wars. So, thank god for The Lego Star Wars Special for completely erasing it from your memory. And in The Lego Star Wars Special, Rey is on a quest in hopes to gain a deeper understanding of the Force, as the rest of her friends gather to get ready for Life Day. Things then get a bit more tricky when Rey’s adventure is then hurled in a major crossover with different time periods in Star Wars lore. The question then remains: will Rey make it back time for Life Day?
Say what you will about certain installments in the Star Wars franchise, but Star Wars is awesome and the fans (non toxic ones) are the best and represent true and positive fandom, and something that The Lego Star Wars Special does really well is honors all the Star Wars movies that have before it. While a large group of people don’t appreciate the prequels, there’s a generation that does and The Lego Star Wars Special almost promotes itself as a love letter to all of the Star Wars trilogies. Yes, this is something kids would enjoy more, but at the same time, this is a special that will make every Star Wars fan grinning from ear to ear for the entire length of the special. The Lego Star Wars Special is also absolutely hilarious and that comes within the speciality of being in the format of Lego. The beauty of Lego is that it’s very self aware of the silliness and the goofiness and it embraces that aspect in spades for the most part, and that definitely works in The Lego Star Wars Special.

It’s also great to see Rey, Finn and Poe back on screen, despite it not being the original actors that gave life to these character back in 2015. What The Lego Star Wars Special also does is it really makes you miss these three great and treasured Star Wars characters. If Lucasfilm wanted to continue the legacy of these characters and tell more stories in animation form, that’s something that could definitely work.
All in all, The Lego Star Wars Special will make you proud to be a fan of this franchise. It’s fun, colorful, hilarious and an insane blast. But is The Lego Star Wars Special the greatest crossover all time? Quite possibly so.
My grade for The Lego Star Wars Special: B
